Working a sedentary job can be grueling when trying to stay active. Most of the time your job calls for extreme focus on tasks presented on your monitor for about 90 percent of your work day. The prolonged hours sitting is certainly not healthy for your body and mental health. Humans were designed to move, so do not let your desk job control being stagnant. Below are three ways I stay active at my desk job:
- I bought a standing desk! Honestly, if you work with me you realize I have a hard time sitting all day to begin with. I usually resulted to lunging on one knee or squatting while typing on my keyboard. When Cyber Monday came around, I used some of my extra cash in the bank to purchase a high quality standing desk I can use for ten plus years. The standing desk did cost about $250, but you can purchase a nice standing desk for $150 on Amazon. Note: I stand for about 5 hours in the work day. I suggest allocating half the work day for standing while completing work tasks.
- Take the alternate route. Instead of calling a co-woker at your desk, walk to their office and ask the question you need answered to complete a task. You can also stay active if you have papers that need to be shredded or recycled. Taking breaks every 30 minutes should not be frowned upon at work, it helps with reducing burnout. Note: Do not be afraid to take the long walk down the other end of your work building to shred a paper!
- Use your lunch break to your advantage. I suggest taking a 20 minute walk around lunch time at work to keep your body active. Maybe you want to pick up lunch while you are at it too! For the amount of time you are sitting at work, you deserve to reward your body by using what it is designed to do! To move! Note: Say yes to co-workers who want tag along on your walk! Walking and talking is a great way to enjoy moving your body.
At the end of the day, you decide how you want to treat your body. Do not let the pressure of sitting down and burning your brain out at your job stop you for doing what will maintain your health in the long run. I do understand that everyone wants to keep their job, but even if you can get moving for 10-15 minutes, it will make all the difference. Being able to move your body and stay active is a blessing within itself.
